Players take turns placing discs on an 8×8 board. When you place a disc, all opponent's discs between your new disc and another of your discs (in any direction) are flipped to your color. The player with the most discs when the board is full wins.
In Reversi, corners are the most valuable positions — discs placed there can never be flipped. Avoid giving your opponent corners. In the opening, try to minimize the number of discs you have (counterintuitively, fewer discs early = more mobility).
Othello is a trademarked version of Reversi with standardized rules and a specific starting position. The games are nearly identical. Reversi is the original name; Othello is the commercial brand name.
